Johnny Depp Donates To Great Ormand Street Hospital~

Johnny Depp secretly visited Great Ormond Street Hospital yesterday (1/14/08) to donate £1 million of his own money to thank staff for saving his daughter's life.

He arrived unexpectedly at the London children's hospital where eight-year-old Lily-Rose was treated last year when her kidneys failed.

Last week he invited five Great Ormond Street doctors and nurses to the party for the London premiere of his film Sweeney Todd.

And on November 29, unknown to the public, Depp spent four hours at the hospital telling bedtime stories to patients dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow after having his Pirates Of The Caribbean costume flown over from Los Angeles.

Hollywood star’s kind words for dying Mark

Marie Burchill
24/ 1/2008

A GRANDAD has thanked a Hollywood star for the comforting words that helped bring some cheer to the final days of his dying grandson’s life.

Pirates of the Caribbean hero Johnny Depp sent an emotional video message to eight-year-old Mark Westwood as he fought an aggressive brain tumour.

In the message the Pirates of the Caribbean star told him to keep his chin up and wished him lots of luck for the future.

Paul Robinson, of Levenshulme, said his grandson watched the 35- second video email ‘over and over’ in the final days of his short life.

Paul, 61, who lives on St Oswald Road, said: "We are so grateful to Johnny Depp for everything he did for Mark.

"Mark was a massive fan of his films and the message was really special and personal to him. It really meant a lot."

The video arrived after Mark’s parents – Barry and Sarah – became friendly with a couple, who also had a sick child, while Mark was being treated at Alder Hey Hospital.

The couples turned to each other for support during their sons’ treatments and, when Mark’s parents revealed that he was a fanatical fan of Pirates of the Caribbean films, they discovered their new friends were pals with the Golden Globe-winning star.

Not long after the conversation the personal email from Johnny Depp dropped in to Sarah’s email inbox.

During the dedicated message the 44-year-old star expressed his admiration for Mark, told him to ‘keep his chin up’ and wished him ‘all the best and lots of good luck for the future’.

Johnny Depp dressed up as his Pirates of the Caribbean character – Captain Jack Sparrow – for the video, after he heard of Mark’s love of the films. He also sent a signed photograph to the youngster.

Mark was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in May 2005 and despite three operations he lost his fight for life in January last year.

Mark lived in Prestatyn, Wales, after his mum, dad and two brothers – Peter and Lee – moved from their family home on Pennington Street, just off Stockport Road in Levenshulme.

Mark’s mum, Sarah, 37, was brought up on Hannah Street in Levenshulme with her mum and dad, Paul and Linda.

The family have paid an emotional tribute to their son, who was a keen golfer.

Dad Barry said: "Mark did so many special things during his life and we have a lot of people to thank.

"Alongside the very special message from Johnny Depp, he was granted his wish of becoming a police officer for the day by North Wales Police and he got to step out on the turf as a mascot for his team Manchester City."

Following his grandson’s death, Paul has become a fundraiser for the charity, Brain Tumour UK.

He said: "I don’t want Mark’s death to be a waste and after going through the experience I have found out there is hardly any funding in this area."

Paul is now set to host a fundraising gig with his rock band, Killer Instinct, to raise money for Brain Tumour UK.

The gig will take place at the Thatched House music venue, 74 Churchgate, Stockport on Sunday, February 10. For tickets contact Paul on 0161 224 3052.

Depp to help teenage coma victim

Rex Features

Johnny Depp has promised to help a 17-year-old girl who has been in a coma for five months.

Fan Sophie Wilkinson was seriously injured in a car crash last year and has been in intensive care in Southampton General Hospital.

Depp agreed to record a voice message as his Pirates of the Caribbean character Jack Sparrow in an attempt to rouse the teenager after her parents wrote asking for help. He also said he would try to visit her.

Her dad Andrew is quoted as saying: "We are looking for the key to wake her up, so we wrote to Johnny and he said he would do the recording in the voice of Jack Sparrow.

"Only this week Sophie moved her right leg, which she has never done before. When we got home my wife and I were jumping for joy!"

Johnny Depp Lends His Voice To "This American Life."

Longtime radio show called This American Life hosted by Ira Glass has recently

found it's way to television via the long running cable channel Showtime.

The second season begins w/ an episode called "Escape" in which Johnny Depp elegantly

provides the voice for a young man named Mike who is confined to a wheelchair due to a

severely debilitating condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

This is an excerpt of an article written about the show and the episode in which Johnny

provides his voice.

And one of the show's best tricks is audio-only. Early on, Ira notes how artificial Mike's computer voice program sounds, and asks whom he would like to sound like, if he could pick any person in the world. Mike suggests either Edward Norton or Johnny Depp -- "Because they're both bad-a--es" -- and a few minutes later, Glass narrates, "Ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Depp," as we hear Depp reading from Mike's e-mails and text messages in voice-over.

Johnny Depp to play at Memorial Concert in Florida

Johnny Depp will appear on stage in Fla. with his former band mates from

The Kids. His first appearance for The Sheila Witkin Memorial Concert was in January  2007.

This is his second appearnance for this worthy cause.

Rockin' and Relivin' Johnny Depp joins his South Florida high school band for reunion concert

South Florida has long been associated with retirement condominiums and skimpy beachwear. But for a short time in the early 1980s, this region was known for a thriving pop-punk and new wave rock music scene.

For the second year in a row, several former rock bands that made up that scene are congregating and playing music in hope of reviving South Florida's reputation as the scene to be seen.

The most famous member of that scene: Johnny Depp, who attended Miramar High School and as a teenager played in a local band called The Kids. The Kids were good enough to have toured with Talking Heads before Depp began his acting career.

On Friday and Saturday, Depp will be back on stage with his former bandmates in the 2nd Annual Sheila Witkin Memorial Reunion Concert at Club Cinema in Pompano Beach. Friday's concert also features The Romantics, who were famous for the pop-punk anthemWhat I Like About You.

"This year's memorial concert is more or less a sequel to the show we did last year," said promoter Martin Chaddock, referring to the first reunion concert in January 2007, in which Depp surprised the audience by walking on stage with his guitar.

Witkin was the mother of Depp's best friend, Bruce Witkin, and manager of a South Florida band called Tight Squeeze. She went on to work atSony Music with a number of bands including Metallica and was so influential that, for a time, South Florida was considered a center of American pop-punk and new wave rock.

"After Sheila died in 2006, Bruce and I decided we wanted to do a benefit in honor of his mother, and I basically did a lot of research and realized we could make this a big event," Chaddock said. "We have people who haven't seen each other in 25 years and get together to put on an amazing show."

Former WSHE-FM program director Neal Mirsky said Witkin's death brought back memories for those who were involved in South Florida's music scene in the early '80s. "We all started reflecting on what an important part of the scene she was. It was almost like a high school reunion. All the bands would play the clubs and circuit. It was nice reuniting everybody."

This year's show will feature retired talents Charlie Pickett, Slyder, Mad As Birds, Z-Cars and Critical Mass along with The Romantics and The Kids.

There also will be special guest appearances by two young bands that are looking to revive the South Florida music scene: Blank Tape, a band whose members all attend Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines, and My Dolls, a California band featuring Bruce Witkin's 16-year-old daughter, Veronica.

One of the goals of the Sheila Witkin Foundation is to relight the spark for rock music that used to shine brightly in South Florida.

"We have a history here that goes back really deep, and we kind of felt that our music scene went away," Chaddock said. "A lot of people over the years are still talking about it, and we felt like it was the right place to do it. It was more like a family. The way these shows came together as a result of Sheila just happened so naturally."

The Sheila Witkin Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that looks to "support proven charities that make a difference." It donated the $30,000 from last year's concert to theDan Marino Foundation. This year, organizers hope to raise more than $100,000. The Dan Marino Center will again be a beneficiary.

"We're hoping to raise more money for the charities," Mirsky said, "and keep our early-'80s new wave music scene going."
